Boil water notice: What does that mean?

There is a risk that the drinking water in your area is contaminated. This means that we recommend boiling the water before you drink it or use it for preparing food.

Boiling the water for two minutes kills the bacteria in the water. If you are using a kettle or a saucepan, the water should be boiled twice with an interval of two to five minutes. The water will not reach the required 100oC for two minutes in a coffee or tea maker.

Only a small risk if you drink the water

There is only a very small risk of you falling ill if you drink the water. So far, we have only found very small amounts of bacteria. However, from now on, you should boil your water before you drink it.

When can I drink the water again?

The water must be boiled until new samples show that it is no longer contaminated. The results of a number of new samples will tell us whether we can lift the boil water notice. Keep an eye on the Current Information page for the latest news.

Protect yourself against illness

– recommendations of the Danish Patient Safety Authority

• Preparing food: The water must not be used for rinsing salads or other raw vegetables. Use cooled boiled water instead. You can use tap water for boiling potatoes, spaghetti, etc. since the bacteria die after being boiled for a short period of time.

• Washing up: Avoid using the dishwasher at home while the water is contaminated. Wash up in boiled water instead.

• Personal hygiene: At the level of contamination currently recorded, the water can be used for showers and baths. However, you should make sure that children do not drink the water when they are in the bath or shower. Wash your hands as usual – before preparing food, you must rinse your hands in cooled boiled water. Use cooled boiled water for brushing your teeth and cleaning dentures.

• Laundry/cleaning: You can use the water for laundry and cleaning purposes.
