There is only a very small risk of you falling ill if you drink the water. So far, we have only found very small amounts of bacteria. However, from now on, you should boil your water before you drink it.

The symptoms of bacterial contamination are stomach aches, diarrhoea, queasiness and vomiting. If you suspect anything, you should contact your GP (general practitioner)

Unfortunately, we can’t answer that at the moment. We take samples from the water supply daily to follow the development of the contamination and to identify its source. We post updates on our website.

The home page of this website will always show the latest updates. The local media will also be regularly informed.

Provided that the bottle you are using for the water is clean, the water should keep indefinitely. However, the bottle won’t be sterile, and since you will be regularly opening and closing it, bacteria could get in. This reduces the real shelf-life of the boiled water, but it should keep for one to two weeks.

A hot water tank does not heat drinking water to the 100oC required to kill any bacteria. Some hot water tanks can be emptied via a valve. Contact an authorised plumbing and heating engineer here if you are in any doubt. If you can’t empty your hot water tank, you can use the hot water for baths and showers until it is empty and fills with clean water.

When we ask you to let the water run for several minutes from each tap, this is to empty your own pipes. If your neighbours don’t do this, it will primarily affect them. If a whole street does not let the water run, there may be some contaminated water in our pipeline. You should therefore talk to neighbours about switching on all taps when the water is suitable for drinking again.
